A large marquee has been erected close to the H ill, and the amusement and enj >y nent of everyone wid be catered for. Nobody should miss th ,- s hne opportunity of spending a pleasant evening and at the same i into supporting a worthy object. As showing the great increase which has taken place in the fltx<*milling industry in the last ten years, is it interesting to note that in 1895 only ‘261 men were employed therein. Tnis number has grown till it now stanls at 3268.

The usual Wednesday evening Band Social wes held in the Public Hall last night. There was an average attendance, hut the fair sex was not well reprfsented. The musical programme was contributed by the Band in their usual finished style. Miss Faes very kindly assisted a the pianoforte during the intervals. The Biorama Company’s Brass Band will play in the Domain rotunda to-morrow afternoon at 3 p.m. The excellent quantities of this band are toi well-known to need special mentioc, and the public will jdoubtless show their appreciation by turning up in large numbets. Those who at any time have had the . misfortune to find themselves ankle deep in mud at the side of Whitaker street, opposite Mess s Johnson and Wigg’s will be pleased to see that this pitt'all has at last been filled and cemented over. Algerian oats, green chaff, going 20 to the ton last season, a splendid sample of Australian grown, treble iuaclunid dressed to be had at Johnson and Wigg.—Advt. Whangarei is- at present jubilant over the new Manual Training and Technical School, opened there on Friday last. We understand that the Band, which by the way has reached a still greater proficiency, owing to other talent being added to it, will march from the Railway Station to the Hall at 11.30, playing en route. As this is a farewell visit and it will be the last oppoituoity that our townspeople will have of hearing and seeing this wonderful combination of talent, we be-’ speak for them a bumper house.
