£SO TO KILL A WIFE, A remarkable cas« came on for hearing at Bro.ieu Hill,-/when Thomas Baker, woodm u'chintbf South Broken Hill, was charged with endeavouring to persuade Dr. Harvey, one of the best-known local medic 1 pric-itioners to murder ,his wife, Elizabeth Alice Baker. It is alleged 'hat m Friday morning Baker Avent to Dr, Harvey’s consulting room, and ask. d Dr. Harvey in a subdued, voice if he could see him privately on a matter of importance. Dr Harvey asked if it was on professional business. Baker said it was. He was taken into a side room, when he said :—“ I have persuade 1 my wife to have some teeth extracted, and she has agreed to take laughing gas. I waut you to attend the operation, and give her an overdose of chloroform or something In on ay Inch she will not survive, and I’ll make it worth your while.” Dr Harvey thought, the man was mad or joking, and sdd joi u'arly diat the suggestion was d ngerous. A better plan would be to give the woman something of a gradu .1 and wasting nature which w u'd not be discovered. To his amazement; Baker handed him £SO in notes. When he took possession of the money. Dr Harvey remarked : “I suppose you want to get rid of your wife to marry another woman ?’ “ That’s what I came to you for, and wL# l the bu-dness isjdoue, I’ll give you £SO more,’ was he reply.
Dr Harvey informed the police, and Baker was aiue-eed.
