The Cathedral Parish of St Mary’s, Parnell, has lost one of its most devoted friends by the death of Major Gay, who has been associated with active church work there for something approaching half a century. “Major” was Mr Gay’s Christian name, and not a military title, though as in the case of the late “ Captain ” Stone, the circumstance led to some amusing confusion at times. The marriage of Lady Mary Lygon reminds the Lance that Mr Soddon once presented her with a book which was. afterwards discovered by a book hunter in a second hand shop in London, and purchased for 2d, It is now that hunter’s most honoured relic and dearer to him than life itself. The presumption was that Lady Mary always carried the book with her as a priceless relic, and robbed by a pickpocket. She feared to advertise for it in c ise Mr Seddon should hear about th.eJ.oss> and send her another.
