A. man named Sewell was defendant in an action for tlie recovery of two head of cattle, and during the hearing of the case becoming violently excited, made a remark that excited suspicion. Magistrate Kenrick reasoned with him to go outside and calm himself, Inspector Wilson and Constable Scott followed with the intention of arresting him, and whilst the Inspector was talking, e.ve t fired an explosive (dynamite), which was in his waistcoast pocket. Wilson was injured by the explosion, and Elijah Bunn, a bystander, seriously injured, while several others were knocked senseless. Inspector Wilson and Bunn were standing alongside Sewell, and Constable Scott was standing behind the Inspector. Sewell’s body was blown to pieces, some portions being picked up about a hundred yards away Dowuies Hall was considerably damaged and windows iu several houses along the street were broken, but for the magistrate having abvised Sewell to leave the court a greater catastrophe must have occurred. Had Sewell fired the explosive iu the building,"the heavy timbe s of the roof would certainly have fallen upon the people below'. Dr Coulon of Reefton was sent for to attend the injured. Buun has regained c >nsci uisness and there are hopes of his recovery.
