Lyttleton, Yesterday* A fisherman named Frederick Newman was drowned in the harbour last night by the upsetting of a boat* Alfred Bilton, who accompanied him, tried to save him, but almost lost consciousness, and was rescued by Wm. Geyland. Newman’s- body has been, recovered*
FIRE AT WARNER'S HOTEL. Christchurch, Yesterday. Shortly before 8 o’clock on Saturday a fire broke out in a linen closet in the upstairs portion of Warner’s Hotel* The flames spread rapidly,, and soon had a good hold, twenty-seven rooms heing burned out before the fire was extinguished. About 10.30 the fire again broke out, while the brigade wus away at another fire, but the railway fire engine and Lyttelton Times plant put it out. The insurance was £II,OOO in the New Zealand Office mostly reinsured* None of the boarders lost anything;, LINOTYPE DISPUTE. Wellington, Yesterday. The Typographical Union, having made good a technical omission by filing a new case, the bearing, of the linotype [dispute by the Conciliation Board began to duy. Mr Fenwick, of the ‘Otago Daily Times,’ is appearing on behalf of the masters*
TRAIN DERAILED*. Invercargill, Yesterday. An excursion train from Dunedin, bringing bask visitors who. had witnessed the embarking of" the fourth contingent, was derailed when approaching the station at six o’clock this morning. The train was a long one, drawn by two heavy engines. The driver of the first train was slightly injured and a passenger, Mr Turnbull, wool dasser-, had to removed to the hospital. The first engine stuck to the main line, but the second engine ran info the siding, capsizing the tender. The railway authorities assert that the points were tampered with by someone possessing special knowledge. The Railway Department offers £IOO, reward for information leading to the discovery of persons who caused the i accident.
DROWNING ACCIDENT. Palmerston North, Yesterday. Mr Thomas Edward,, aged 70, a well-known old man, was- drowned at Motoa, near Foxton yesterday afternoon. Deceased was crossing theriver in a canoe which took in some water. He then sprang out but failed to reach th© shore.. The body is not recovered. BICYCLE ACCIDENT. Nelson, Yesterday. Edward Hockey, 15 years old, fell from a bicycle whilst riding on the Trafalgar Park track in company with another boy. Hockey had his skull fractured and died after removal to the Hospital without recovering consciousness.
