“THE KNOCK BELT.”
WON BY SERGT. W. MAINGAY. Excellent weather prevailed on Thursday afternoon last,, when the bi-annual competition for the Belt presented to the Te Aroha Rifles by Mr W. H. Knock, of the Hot Springs Hotel,. wa3 fired for. No less than nine members of the corps, and who may be termed the picked shots, entered for the trophy. Colour-Sergt. Stanley was in charge of the squad, Vol. R. Jansen, doing the marking. Although in the past some capital shooting has taken place at the T.R.V. butts, that of Thursday last surpassed all previous records.. At the 200 and 500 yards Sergt. Maingay rattled on the “ possible,” placing 23, and 20 to bis credit at tbe 300 and GOO yards ranges, respectively, making a grand total of 93 out of the possible century.. The veteran shot of the corps, Sorgt. Salmon, who, if not top, is always thereabouts, shot most consistently, making a tolal of 90, putting on a trio of 23’s at the 2,3, and 500 yards, and 21 at th« 600. When we cousider that Sergt. Salmon is the oldest shot of the corps, aud, in fact, will shortly be- entitled to the long service medal, his performance on ■Thursday is a credit to him. Yol. Ft Strange . was well up, making 83, while his brother, Corporal F. M. Strange, the last Belt wiuuer, put on 57 at the three first ranges,, retiring at the GOO yards. Colour-Sergt. Stanley shot well at the 2 aud 500 yards ranges, but fell away at the other .two..
