The Boers are beating a hasty retreat in all directions.- The Daily Mail states that the Presidents of the Transvaal and the Orange Free State have made ■ audacious overtures for peace on the basis of the independence of th& Republics. According to the Standard the Government will shortly authoritatively reaffirm the- impossibility of any peace that will perpetuate the • military and political independence of the Transvaal and the Pree State. Britain will dictate, but will make no bargain. The reports as to the disorganisation of the enemy are confirmed. Joubert has gone to Pretoria. It is. stated he has resigned his command owing to a quarrel with Presii dent Kruger. The latter says the war will be ended in a month either by arbitration or intervention. The retreat of the Boers from Osfontein was preceded by sharp fighting. Both Presidents were under shell fire, President Kruger vainly attempting to : rally his troops. The Boers admit they were unable lo withstand the British artillery and such formidable cavalry forces.. The Boers are entrenching Biggarsberg and guarding the western passes of the Drakensberg, mountains. Great preparations are being made for the defence of Pretoria, • The Boers are also.making preparations to resist the forces marching to the relief of Mafeking., The New Zealanders received an' enthusiastic welcome at Carnav.on,.
