Waiorongomai.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The Waiorongomai school children had just assembled yesterday morning and were having a singing lesson when a telegram from the Premier waa received, announcing the surrender of Cronje, and requesting that the school children receive a holiday. It contents were read, and the teacher called for three hearty cheers for Lord Roberts and the British forces in South Africa. - The National Anthem was then sung and the children dispersed for a holiday. A number of girls went home and made flags, and then went around the township ing the news. In different places groups of people could be seen and the sole topic of conversation was the latest war news.

Unfortunately a rumour to the effect that Trooper Charlie McLean had been killed at the front gained currency, and anxious inquiries were made by his many acquaintances, and all were pleased when it was found there was no truth in the report.
