Battalion Staff Appointments.
Lieutenant - Colonel Banks, commanding tho Auckland district, lias notified Captain Harper as follows : “ Tho commander of tho forces has approved of tho undermentioned appointments to the Second Battalion, Auckland Riflo Volunteers, ns from February 9, 1900: Captain and adjutant Ed. W. Porritt to be ac ing major, and to command the battalion ; Crptain A P’Harper, Hnuraki Hides, to be acting-major ; Lieutenant T. W. Somerville, Thames Navals, to be lieutenant and adjutant; John Brown, late lieutenant No. 1 Company, Ouinomuri Rifles, to bo pay and quartermaster.” It may be explained that fho department particularly wished that tho command of tho battalion should bo given to an officer stationed at, Paoroa, and therefore approached Cap'ain Harper to forego his right by seniority to- tho command. In consideration of tho department’s wish, C iptain Harper consented to do this. There is no doubt that the new arrangement will favourably affect the efficiency and cohesion of the ba talion all the officers being capable men and deservedly popular. The battalion staff has lately been much neglected.
