Te Aroha AND Ohinemuri News TE AROHA TIMES A WAIORONGOMAI ADVOCATE. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1900 Notes and Comments.

The much-discussed promenade concert, to he held in the Domain, takes place to-night, and we sincerely hope

that it will be well Patriotic Fund patronised by the Concert- public. The com-

mittee have been hard at work yesterday and to-day making the necessary preparations, and we hope they will have the satisfaction of seeing a largo attendance. As regards tha object sought to he assisted by the concert, nothing that has not been hotter said or written elsewhere on the subject can be expressed here. Whatever opinions we ay have on the necessity for the war may be laid aside for the present. As

Kipling says, “ This aiu’t the time for sermons.'’ The war is now in full swing, and must in-vitably bring in its trnin suffering and distress to many households. We have now an opportunity to help to alleviate that raise y by subscribing to the Fund, and the concert to-night is one <>f the means by which we can help, it is unfortunate that other attractions should happen to bo competing in the town on this particular rnghq but as they are open for two nights the public need not be debarred from witnessing them through being present at the function in the Domain. For the ci-edit of the town, but principally to help on a cau«e that needs assistance, we will a'tend en masse to-night, ami show by their presence their sympathy with the “ Absentminded Beggar ” who is

“Out on active service Wiping something off a slate.” We hope the net result of to-night’s proceedings will form a handsomp addition to a fund the total of which will be accredit to Te‘ Aroha.

At the last meetiug of the Domain Board, a letter was road from the Lands and Survey Department autho-

Domain Improvements.

rising the expenditure of the sum of £485 5s 7d in extending the lawn

and constructing a bowling green. The amount originally voted was £70(1, but. the money received from the Government from time to time for the purpose of putting in the hot water tunnel has evidently been deducted from the original grant. It is questionable whether the balance now available (£485 7s 7d) will be sufficient to carry out the proposed works, but if not, we think, having in view the necessity for the improvements, the Board will be quite justified in pushing it through, even if this means their having to borr w money. The numerous requests which have been made to the Board to have a bowling green c rasti ucted prove that this wou’d bo a m st desirable and popular adjunct to the existing attractions of the D main, and would be the means of attracting to the town a good of visitors. Then there is the crying necessity for an additional tennis court, the need for which must bo apparent to all. All things can only be accomplished when the present lawn area is extended, and now that this is about to be an accomplished fact, the Board will be in a position to comply with the various requests. We understand that the work will he started as soon as the plans and specifications have been ap proved by the Chief Surveyor, Auck. land, under whose supervision it will be carried out.
