TRANSVAAL WAR FUND.

COMMITTEE MEETING.

A meeting of this committee was held in the Domain office on Tuesday night when there were present: Messrs Mills, Pavitt, Hill, Hirst, Crombie, Wright, and McGregor. Jn the absence of tho Mayor, Mr Mills wa s voted to the chair.

Mr Salmon was present as a delegate from the volunteers, and complained that they had bpen somewhat discour’eousty treated, inasmuch as they had not been notified until after it had been publicly advertised that they were to take part. The secretary explained that no discourtesy was meant, nor had it been offered, as ho had gone to Captain O’Meagher and explained the wh< lo matter, and that officer had undertaken to lay the matter before the company and induce them to take part in the proceedings. Mr Salmon said, in effect, that the whole misunderstanding had arisen from the fact that Mr O’Meagher had never mentioned the matter to tho company.

The date of the entertainment gave rise to a prolonged discussion. Messrs Pavitt. and Hirst, who were deputed to see the business peop’e re closing for three hours on the evening of Saturday, 10th February, reported that they had not formally done so, but from conversations with several of the tradespeople they gathered that the suggestion would not be taken up. A proposal was then made to have the concert on Friday night, but Mr McGregor, who had been appointed to arrange the programme, explained that so far all the arrangements had been mado for a Saturday night, and an alteration would upset matters considerably. It was ultimately decided to adhere to the original date—Saturday, 10th February. The. secretary was instructed to arrange for the printing and distribu'ion of 1009 handbills, and the matter of procuring a naval uniform- for one of the tableaux was left in Mr Salmon’s hands.

Mr Crombie submitted a Rketch of the proposed stage and decorations, and he was authorised to procure the n-'cessary material for decorating.
