Te Aroha AND Ohinemuri News TE AROHA TIMES & WAIORONGOMAI ADVOCATE. SATURDAY, JANUARY 27, 1900.
!We regret to mention that much dissatisfaction exists amongst the members of the Te Aroha Rifles, owing to the manner in which they are constantly being treated by the District Officer. Some time ago an application was made by the Officer Commanding ■ the Corps for railway passes for the . Non-Oorumiesioned Officers to proceed to Auckland to compete against the Non-Commissioned Officers of No. 1 Battalion, but on account of the oppo- , eilion shown by Lieut Colonel Banks, the passes were not supplied, which resulted in the fact of the competitors hr ring to pay their own railway fares to and from Auckland. We e frequently had to refer to the actions of the District Commanding Officer regarding the discouragement shown to "Volunteers generally, especially- to those of our local corps. On last Queen's Birthday a battalion parade of the several corps at Thames and Ohinemuri was held at Paeroa, and although railway passes were asked for, they were not granted, and the men had also on that occasion to pay out of their own pockets. One of the Companies present had the required number to earn the 2s 6d per man for a daylight drill of 2A hours du. ation, but, nothwithstanding that, ffio men Were more than 5 hQUrs under arms before they were allowed-a rest, the 28 6d alloWod by the regulations was not paid, owing to the opposition manifested towards tfro country corps.
