CRICKET MATCH.
TE APOHA v KATIKATI.
On Saturday last ,an eleven from the Te Avoha Cricket Club jouvned to Katikati to play a friendly game with the wielders of the willow in that district. At 5 o’clock a.m. the team left Te Aroha in one of Mr E. Gallagher’s brakes and four, Mr GlynnLewis in charge of the ribbons, arriving at their destination, viaPaeroa, Karangahake, and Waihi, in the afternoon. A short stay was made at Waihi for breakfast, which was served up in Host Lawless’ best style, and indeed it is one of the things which go towards making a successful ‘ outing, being well-looked after by the Host and Hostess at the respective hi tels en route. At Katikati the .players put up at Shepherd’s where everything possible was dene to make them comfortable.
The Te Aroha eleven, although somewhat fatigued _by the long journey went to the wickets first and knocked up a total of f-6, facing the bowling of Eskvigge and Blakey. The principal run-getters being Banks with 41, who maintained his reputation as a reliable scorer; Biggs, with 10, was the only other player to reach two figures.' In the second innings, Eagar .aud Maingay, 8 each were the highest scorers. For Katikati, Fletcher, 11, was the only batsman to make a stand. It was found impossible to play two innings, and Te Aroha thus won on the first innings. Eagar and Biggs were the most successful with the ball.
At the close of the match cheers wore called for by Messrs Pavitt, and M. Stewart, for the respective teams, which were heartily responded to.
Capt. "PeviP, in a few well-chosen remarks, referred to the great pleasure it gave him to meet his old friemd, Mr M. Stewart, and called for throe hearty cheers for that gentleman, which were vociferously responded to. He hoped the time was not far distant when a return match would take place. Taking the trip all through a most enjoyable time was spent by those wh- jjhad the privilege of accompanying of the party. The foil iwing are .the scores : Te Aroha.—lst Innings.
