The Te Aroha Brass Band will render selections in the Domain this evening. The sale cf privileges in connection with the Te Aroha Agricultural and Horticultural Society's Show, will take place cn Saturday, 29fch inst. Horse owners are reminded that nominations close to-morrow evening for the Te Aroha Jockey Club’s i.aoes, with the secrotarj", J. W. Eennick. The races take place on 10th and 12th February. The officer commanding the Te Aroha Rifles has received a notification from the Brigade office that the annual Volley and Independent firing will be held on Thursday afternoon, 25th inst. at 2.80 p.m. and an Inspection Parade is called for the same evening. A Blenheim paper tells a story in reference to a lady who wouldn’t vote for either continuance or no license, but informed her friends, * I am going to vote for reduction ; I have always thought the publicans charged too much for their liquor. Their prices ought to be reduced.’ The No. 2 Battalion of the Ohinemuri Rifles intend to hold a memorial service for the late Trooper Bradford in the Criterion Theatre, Paeroa, on Sunday, 28th iu-st. All the corps of the battalion will be strongly represented. The Rev TV. H. Wilson, chaplain of the battalion, will preach. In view of the local business people’s c omplaint. of bad times and difficulty in collecting accounts, the annnal return of .the Post Office Saving Bank deposits in Thames district is instructive At the end of 1599 the total credit balance of 6569 depositors amounted to £186,542 17s 9d. At a meeting of the office-bearers of the Hamilton-Te Awainutu Wesleyan Circuit on Thursday evening Rev H S Dewsbury presided. It was decided to request the Conference to appoint either Rev Griffith or Bellhouse as Minister in charge to fill the vacancy caused by Dr Hoskiug’s resignation.
Dante, the conjuror, gave one of his clever sleiglit-of-hand performances in the Town Hall last night. There was a fair, audience, and, judging by the applause, they seemed to bo delighted at the piofessor’s wonderful and clever tricks. He was ably assisted by Mdile Edmunda, widow of Dante the Great.
