A little boy, belonging to Te Aroha, had a narrow escape of being shot the other day as what follows will show. It appears that one of our volunteers was in his back yard shooting at a kerosene lin with what is known as a pea rifle. One of the bullets, missing its mark, went into the adjoining yard where some children were at play. The missile struck the hat of one little fellow, knocking it on to the back of his head. Fortunately it did no harm, beyond making a hole in his hat, and the boy played on with his companions, seemingly quite unconscious that he had had such a narrow escape. A rather serious accident took place at Ranriatea on Tuesday evening. It appears that as a young man named • UCarthy was disc harrowing some her rough, land he got thrown off, harrows passing over him, making ia ;, ugly wound on one of his logs. Lord Eanfurly has cabled home offering his house and park at Dungannon for the use of the sick and wounded soldiers', moro especially those belonging to Irish regiments. The house has about 100 rooms, and could accommodate at least 4000 men. The park is of about 1000 acres, stands on high ground, and altogether Lord Ranfurly’s seat is very suitable for such a purpose. Dungannon is about 40 miles from Belfast.

At Gisborne, on Saturday last, a man named John Haekett, was found on the river bank with his hands and face badly injured by the explosion of a dynamite cartridge. The police are of opinion that it is a case of a premeditated attempt at suicide. The man was removed to the hospital, and is progressing favourably. Diamonds and other gems have been discovered lately in the American Lake region over an area 600 miles long by 200 wide. Nearly all the diamonds are from tlie'glacial drift. They vary in size from to 21 carats, and in colour from white to green and yellow. Several are very fine.

A German has invented a safe that, on its lock being tampered with, throws open the door, seizes and drags and lock* in the burglar, and handcuffs and holds him in readiness to be eondue'ed to the police court in the morn■i'ig. This is almost equal to the American servant-girl patent bed, which, at a certain hour in tho morning, pitches her out, dresses her, carries her downstairs, and Bhows her how to light the fire. A runaway, which might have ended in considerable damage being done, occurred yesterday aftei'uo u. It appears that a horse and trap were standing at the railway station, waiting for the train to come ir. when the horse took fright and bolted. Fortunately the animal was captured before any damage was done, beyond upsetting the contents ( which consisted of fruit) along the road.
