DR. ORPEN.
ARRIVAL IN AUCKLAND. THE EXTRA DITION PRO- , •' CEEDINGS. Auckland, Last Night. The mail steamier Mariposa which arrived from San Francisco to-day numbered among its passengers were Detective Maddern and his prisoner, Dr Herbert Orpen, wh© is charged with the murder of Susan McOallum. Dr Orpen travelled as a steerage passenger. Scon . after the steamer’s arrival at Quay- street Wharf this morning D ■ Orpen was tsken ashore end lodged ia the High Street lock-up to, be brought before the Pi 'lice Court. Later on iu the morning the Court was crowded, when the case was called and Dr Orpen appeared in the dock he looked a good deal older than when last in Auckland, and was by no means "to well trimmed a 1 of yore, he still has on the coat which he used to wear in Auckland, easily recognisable by the Astrachan collar and cuffs. The prisoner was charged chat on December 25th, 1897, he did at Auckland kill and murder one Susan Harriet Campbell McOallum. He made no reply when the charge was read. Mr McAllister, instructed by the Crown Prosecutor (Mr J. A. Tole), appeared for the prosecution, while Messrs Theo Cooper and T. E. Baume were present on behalf of the accused. Messrs D. G. McDonnell and J. Leydon, J’B.P., were on the Bench. An adjournment till Tuesday was asked for by Mr McAllister, the accused had only arrived that morning and there had been no opportunity for either side to go into the facts of - the case. ‘ We have no objection to a remand,’ said Mr Cooper, ‘ subject of course to to our right to have a further-remand if we require one.’ The ease was accordingly adjourned till Tuesday.
