. ’***•* • to the decision of the Domain ‘Bfigrd to - have a demonstration on Queen’s Birthday on the opening of
the new Bath house by the Hon A. J. Gadman, the volunteers had arranged for a field day on the rifle range. In-, . stead, therefore, of taking the after- . noon, after firing the feu-de-joie, as in “loyal duty- abound, theyl' assemV bled - at: 8 a.m. on. the range in full muster under Capt. Whiteley and Lieut. Scott. Sergt- Weems and Yol Summers were in charge of the targets and marking, and well they did it. The men Had Jbeen classified into three classes, and trophies that had presented by the business folk of Te Aroha were allotted to each class. ;So that those who' were entirely new to the rifle, had only to compete with th se in a similar position—the same wirh the marksmen or first-class shots; .The morning was .dull' and the wind strong; the. positions being standing ; and kneeling was a fairly severe test, %hd those who were of strong-physique had ,the advantage over their less robust comrades. .The result of the competitions were as follows: -7 • Ist’ class—Yol F. Mikklesen Ist, IQs ; Yol Smales 2nd, smoking cap, presented by Mrs Fugil; 'Yol Borrie 3rd, pair -fowls, presented by Sergt Stanley ; Yol Westbury'4th;“ (choice of a book), presented by Te Aroha News; Yol Goodfellow sth, combination strop, presented by Mr Hobson; Yol Tattersall 6th, silk tie, presented by Mr Hetheringtpn; Yol. Power 7th, pair spurs, Mr Mcladoe ; Yol Morse §tb, Argosy braces, presented by M r May.- - ~ There was also Is extra prize in each class won by Yols Cornes, Gallagher, and Cummings, the 3s being the balance left of cash donation after being divided into the three first prizes of ten shillings each.
