Tm? monthly meeting of the abov< Council was held at Morrinsvillo nr, Wedneaday,, when there were present: Councillors Chepmell (in the chair) MpCaw, Hunt, Aitken, Gavin, .am; Bing. - Fainting Piako Bridge.—-Cr Gavin, who was authorised t<* receive tenders, repd ted that only' on® had beejire ceived, viz., W. Hogan, which winconsidered too high, and as the Engineer had advised that the work should be done for £ls, the tender was not accepted. The matter was left with Or Gavin and the,Clerk to arrange for fresh tenders. ,
B3lance.Bheet.-rr.Tho balance-sheeti-for half-year and year ending 31#< March, 1898, were submitted to the Council by the Clerk. The yearly balance sheet showed the total revenue for the year to be £2797 6s s<l, and the expenditure £2531 10s 54, leaving a debit balance on general account ampunting to £744 4s. After deducting bir|dits of" fKe various riding accounts‘amounting ■; to £326 lOs 6d„ the, n«(tjt overdraft from the bank at expiry of financial year, was £417 13s 64. It was decided to ask the Bauk for lan overdraft up to the full local limit.
Charitable Aid.—The Clerk of the Waikato Hospital and .Charitable Aid B mrd wrote requesting payment of £498, being amount allocated to Coun* oil astheir contribution for charitable aid purposes, for the ensuing year. Council decided to pay an instalment of £9B.
Subsidies.—The Treasury notified that £2Bl 5s had been placed to Council’s credit, being an advance on subsidy on rotes collectable by Waitoa Bead Boaid, and outlying districts. The Allocut >r of Goldfields Revenue, Thames, also advised that £B3 2s 5d had been placed to Council’s credit, being revenue from February. Railway Drains,—The District Engineer of the Railway Department wrote repudiating any responsibility for lowering culverts to suit water courses which had been artificially altered from their original level. Slaughterhouse License.—Atr application was received from John Walls for permission to slaughter On a section—• formerly Holtby’s —at Waitoa. The application was objected to by Mr N. A. Larhey, of Waitoa, a : resident of the locality, on the ground that the site was adjacent to alow lying river flat, and that the yard would soon become foul and danger <>us. Council decided to adjourn the application till nest meeting, in order 10 permit of further enquiries being made. ' ■ 1 Slaughterhouse Inspector. Conwas gazetted Inspect the To Apdiii^Waitoa, and Matamatavridings, having been re moved tq {Auckland, Council decided to recommeud Constable Forbes to the Government for appointment.
Tirau-R *torua Road.—ln reply to Council’s Tequest for grant in aid of hridges raaiuteuauce on this road, the Surveyor-General wrote that at present no fuinls were available, but that the matter would be considered when preparing the Estimates for the coming year.' Leave of Absence.—Geo. Wattam, foreman, was granted a week's leave, his son to be left in charge during that
period," Tenders.—Cr Harrison reported haying accepted the following tenders for carting, etc., on the Te Aroha-Licb-field road : No 83. W. Stanley 2s per yard; No. 84, W. Stanley 19d per yard. : ; y' Gordon-Waharoa Road—-Cr Herries reported that as authorised by Council he had let three small contracts on this road to the amount of £37, as follows: J. Hill £il ss; ?• Orr £9 10s; and A. Thackray £l6 ss. Waihou Drain. Mr. Bomo ask,:d Council to contribute towards cost of Work he had done in clearing the Wai, wera creek from the County drain to the Piranui. The drain is blocked from where he left off; and he sug gested that Council should see to its beingdenned.. Council decided they could n«>t see their way to pay any money for this work, and to instruct the Foreman to attend to cleaning out drain.
. Waiorongomai Tramway.—T. An derspn, contractor for repairs to thi.< property, asked for an extension of time, as he had experienced great delay in getting his timber, and also in getting men to work. Council decided to defer this request tiU completion of the contract, when they would be guided by circumstance? in dealing with the matter. -
Fines, The following fines, were inflicted on contractors who were over their time : J. Orr 30s; 0. Crouch 40s; and F. Walker 1 Os. Waioropgomai Tram. -—.Cr Gavin on behalf of the Aroha Gold Mine* Co., declined to renew the usual arrangement, whereby that Company had charge of and was responsible far f he tram, as there were ether companies wanting to use it. Counci decided to eqiploy a man to look: after tram; till next meeting, an. 1 Gbmppny usingtram in the meantime to bore sponsible for.damage. It was remitted to Crs Gavin and Hemeo to arrange terns of an ©greeiaeafc between Council
»nd the various companies interested. Foremen’s Reports.—Geo. Mahood n reporting on the roads in bis die- ■ net, said he would require an extra nan to repair roads and clean out water-tables before the winter sets in ■<oine portions of . the Cambridge- -i Xapier road between Gorton gravel pit and Caambridge, require attention. He suggested Council should let tenders for 8 of TO chains of gravelling on newly formed part of CambridgeKTapier read, near Hinnera Station, as he had hot time to do it himself. The Council Agreed to hqve all these 1 works dona as suggested " Foreman Wattaui’s specifications for grading 2 cuttings, lifting and re setting of pipes, and 5 chains formation near Gage-Brown’s at Shaftesbury, was passed, and tenders ordered to be -alien for next meeting.
