Successful Railway Administration.

The success which has attended Mr Cadman’s administration of the railways has elicited cordial encomiums from Captain Russell and other prominent members of the Opposition party. We learn that the favourable results disclosed in the last report have been more than sustained throughout the past year. The Minister of Bailways estimates that he will have a surplus of nearly ninety thousand pounds at theend of the financial year, notwithstanding that the capital account has been increased by the expenditure of £162,000 out of the £200,000 asked for for additional rolling stock, and notwithstanding the heavy flood damages in Hawke’s Bay and Rangitikei last Easter. His statement in the House that .the railways would pay three per cent will be fully borne out. Thirty-seven and a half miles of new line have been opened during the year at a cost of £270,000, and in spite of the large amount of additional rolling stock constructed and in use the increase in the volume of trade has been so great as to render the demands for more rolling stock, especially trucks, as keen as ever.
