RANGTATEA ESTATE. * Hamilton, Saturday. Mr E. de C. Drury, surveyor, his received instruotions from the Government to sub-divide the Rangiatei Estate, which has been taken over by the Government from the Assets Board. It is purposed to submit the land for public competition on April Ist. THE SILVERSTREAM TRAGEDY, Wellington, Saturday. At the murder trial, to-day, several witnesses were examined, ‘heir evidence being mainly a repetition of that g'veu in he lower Co irt, Stewart Menzies, the postmast r. at Silve - stream, emphatically denied the suggestion that he had known where Hawthorne’s grave was before, leading the police to it Mrs Sower by denied that-Hawthorne had paid her marked attention, but said her husband had told Hawthorne nob to come to the house. She had done Hawthorne’s washing for some time prior to this, which was September 4th, The case will occupy all next week, DISEASED CATTLE. Napier, Saturday, The Borough Council several years ago made bye-laws for the inspection of dairies supplying milk to the. town, and under them a number of cattle suspected of disease were killed ; but the byedaw did hot extend to the dairies where the milk was made into butter The Stock Department have recently been inspecting some with the tuberculosis test, with the result that a number of cows were condemned, in one herd of sixty, thirty-five being set aside for slaughter. These, with five others from other dairies, w;ere slaughtered at Tomoana to-day. Thirty eight proved to be suffering from tubculosis, and the other two from actinomycosis
DEATH OF AN OLD MAORI WOMAN ■i -i ’ ■ ■ ' Wanganui, Saturday. An old Maori woman, over 100 years of age, died yesterday morning in town. Several of deceased granddaughters are married to European settlers. She was mother-in-law to the chief of Koriniti (a pa up the river), who is over 80 years of age. She has many great great grandchildren, and was the oldest Maori en the Wanganui river.
