MINING.
SHIPMENT- 01 BULLION. The Bank of New Zealand shipped by the Tarawera for Sydney yesterday en route for London, 6 boxes of bullion, containing 6i>9Bozs, the shipment being valued at tie very handsome sum of £27,000.
WOODSTOCK. * : INCREASE OF PLANT, f ; ■: . Qabled instructions have been received from. Home to call for tenders for increased cyanide plant, battery extension, and water-race for the Woodstock mine. Wnen this contemplated increase is completed the new battery will consist of 40 head of stamps. . These instructions form gratify jjg evidence of the confidence felt in Great Britain in the property, as it does also of the intention to push .on the development of the Woodstock.
HOW GOLD AT KUMARA WAS DISCOVERED. Goldfields are'sometimes discovered in the most unlooked for manner, A case in point was mentioned in the Midland Railway arbitration proceedings. Gold, it appears, was first discovered at Kumara during a search for a private still which was suspected to be in existence there. Once the discovery was made it may safely be assumed that very little interest was left for the whereabouts of the still. SLY GROG SELLING. Dunedin, December 12. Two charges of sly grog selling were .heard at Balclutha yesterday. Furguson, a member of the Permanent Artillery, was informant in each instance. Both cases were dismissed. Mr Hawkins, S.M. said in two years of prohibition there had been 14 convicted and £285 in fines inflicted. He suggested that the Government should appoint a commission to inquire into the working of prohibition in the district.
