On Tuesday evening last Mr Grant, Traffic Manager, Mr Wood, Traffic Inspector, n»! Mr : MqAndrew,' Engineer in charge of the Te Aroha-Paeroa Railway, paid a visit of inspection to the works, being oo iveyed over the section by special train after the arrival of the ordinary train from Auckland.
The-Auction sale of 40 East coast horses by Mr D. Lundon was unavoidably postponed, Mesars McNicol will sell them today immediately after Messrs Reid and Dickson’s sale, the horses are a good, useful lot, and should attract'many bidders. He weighed 4,900 pounds the day ho. arrived in Philadelphia. This mountain of beef was of mixed stock, being short horn, native, ‘ scrub,’ and Ayrshire, the short-horn predomination, After the exhibition was ended the- giant ox was butchered and exhibited as 4 Bhow beef’ at Philadelphia during the holidays of 1875. A short-norn steer weighing 4,1Q0 pounds was slaughtered at Detroit in 1874 ; A. N. Meal of Moherly, Mo., formerly owned the largest cow ; in the wourld. Mr. Meal disposed of her in 1883, the Cole Circus Company being the. purchasers, She weighed the day of sale 3,296 pounds. Mr, John Pratt of Chase County,. Kan, 4 was formerly the owner of a cow weighing 3,200 pounds. She was of the common 4 scrub’ stock and stood nineteen hands high.
On Tuesday last Messrs Lewenburg and Douglas had a very satisfactory, and successful meeting. -with the settlers of the Pukekohe and surrounding districts, over the sugar-deet question, Major Harris, M. H.R. presiding, From the tone of the meeting at its earlier stages it was evident that there!were a good many present not disposed favourably towards the enterprise! but after Hearing the proposals and the satisfactory replies to the various points raised, all misgivings were laid aside and the advantages of beet culture to a district so much taken up in dairying such as theirs, was generally admitted.: The distance from Waifeato. where the mill will be erected, was, of course, recognised as a serious: part of the business, and it was felt that whether the culture of beet can be carried on in their district or not de- ( upon the Railway Depart-' meat m fixing their charges forthe service. Thursday last was the day appointed for the nomination of candidates to fill the vacancy in the Waitoa Road Board, but as there were no nominations received, Mr Bremner, Returning Officer, notifies that he has appointeq the 24th inst. as the day to receive nominations, and tho 4th prox. as Election day. A Concert and Dance in aid of the Ohinomuri Hospital fund will be held in Paeroa on Tuesday evening next Great preparations are being made to ensure the success it Jdeserves. The Thames Burns’ Club have offered their services and are contributing no less than six Scottish dances. The committee of management are at present in negotiation with the Railway authorities to run a special train from Te Aroha on Tuesday evening, returning after, the entertainment; We hope that a large number will show their sympathy with the movement by attending this venture. . . . .
