THE SUGAR BEET INDUSTRY.
Hamilton, Saturday. The meeting on Thursday evening convened by the Mayor for the discussion of the sugar beet question was largely attended. The Mayor, Mr W.* Dey, occupied the chair, and in opening, the meeting made a few remarks as to the importance of the subject and the great benefit that would accrue to all in the event' of the sugar indust ly be started in the Waikato.,
Mr A. Swarbriek then spoke to’ some length, and as this gentleman has had some experience in the matter bn the continent his remarks were listened to with great attention. The question, Mr Swarbriek said, was one that interested everybody be he a farmer, tradesman, or a professional man, and he was certain from what he had seen on the continent of Europe that there has never been anything yet proposed in the Waikato that would have such an immediate and permanent result as the establishing of the sugar beet industry. Mr Swarbriek moved tbe “ The residents in and about Hamilton take active steps to aid the enterprise.” This was seconded in 'eL few words by Mr R. F. Sandes, and was put to the meeting and carried unanimously. A number of gentlemen then addressed the meeting, and the question was thoroughly threshed out, and a committee consisting of of Messrs W. Dey (Mayor), Captain Steele, A. Swarbrick, G. Edgoeumbe, 0. Barton, R. F. Sandes, G. W. Gajae, and Mr Yates was then appointed to draft a scheme or schemes to give effect to the first resolution. - - A vote of thanks to chair terming ated the meeting. £' Messrs Lewenburg and Douglas have extended the time for receiving the guarantee of. 2, 500 acres until' the 30th December. .
