Te Aroha AND Ohinemuri News AND UPPER THAMES ADVOCATE.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 27,1895.

* Thla above all—te thine own self bo trne, 4nd it most follow as the night the day Thou canst nob then be false to any man.' 81l 4KEfci-aARB.

A Masonic-Lodge under the New Zealand constitution is being formed at ICarangahake.

In order to keep pace with the times the timber merchants in Paeroa are weekly receiving large consignments of timber. The nsnal sitting of the S.M, and Warden’s Court will be held in the Court* house, to-morrow (Thursday), commencing at 10 o’clock. ,

Mails for the United Kingdom, Europe, etc., via San Francisco, will close here on Friday 29th, at 6.55 a.m., due in London on Ist January.

' McNicol & Co.’s Paeroa live stock sale will tako place on Thursday next, the 28th inst.

Oar defenders' parade for inspection tomorrow afternoon at 6 o’clock sharp. It is expected the Adjutant will be present to inspect and instruct the men, and we hope a good muster will bo found on this occasion. '

Constable Pardy stationed at Waihi lately-visited the Whangamata district with the object of ascertaining the disease the natives there are suffering from. He found several prostrated with an illness resembling typhoid, and he also heard that although six deaths have occurred during the last six months no remedial steps have been as yet taken. The Auckland police authorities have telegraphed the facts to Wellington, and no doubt the Government will afford the natives medical aid and medicine.

On Sunday afternoon last the ballast engine arrived in this district. The trucks, some 20' in number, arriving the previous afternoon, and proceeded down to the Paeroa end of the line on Monday morning. As it is impossible to cross the* Ohinemuri bridge for a few days, the work of raising the line on the long swamp is . being proceeded with in the meantime.

On Sunday last Evangelist Muldoon conducted services in the Ohinemuri portion of this circuit. The congregations were large on each occasion; at Waihi the Mission Hall was crowded to its" utmost capacity, fully 250 persons being present. During the service Mr Muldoon sang the sacred solo, ‘ Throw Out the Life-line,' the congregation heartily joiningnn the chorus. The Waitekauri G.M. Co., are employing a large, number of men on their property, and the surrounding country presents quite a picturesque appearance. There are at the present time over 100 men employed by this company, and the surrounding tents puts one in mind of the early days of California. The construction of the water-race is being pushed ahead with the utmost possible speed, quite an army of men being employed thereon. Owing to the rise in the price of dressed flax, ail the mills between Palmerston North and Foxton are making preparations for turning out a large quantity. Those that have not already started will do so during this month.- This , should be encouraging news to the owners of the several flaxmills in this district, and as green flax seems to have grown in abundance in this district since it was last cut, some three or four years ago, we hope the owners will lose no time in getting the mills under way. and that ere long we may hear the rausio of the strippers in all directions. '

News from Waihi states that building operations are being carried .on briskly under the different contractors. Besides those in course of erection, plans, etc., are being prepared for other work, which, when completed should add greatly to the appearance of this flourishing township. Our Paeroa friends are agitating for a hospital to be erected in their district. This is a step in the right direction, and one that should be supported by every citizen in the Ohinemuri County. We understand that Messrs Cassi-el and Bennett have made a very generous offer—viz', to give the opening night of their Criterion, Theatre free to those gentlemen who are exerting themselves in the matter Strong efforts are being made to get the Auckland Amateur Opera Company to come to Paeroa, and to play the ‘ Mikado ’ for the opening night. We believe that they have expressed their willingness to come and give their services for the benefit of the Hospital,’only asking that their expenses be paid. - ;

Messrs Reid and Dickson, wheelrighte, etc., having removed into their now premises in Whitaker-street, opposite Gallagher’s stables, they are now in a position to carry out fir t-cHss work in all branches of the trade, in an up-to-date manner, and at bed-rock prices'. This firm ha'vo for sale several sulkies, spring carts, light waggons, etc.,'which will be disposed of cheap. - The athletic sports to be held at Paeroa on Saturday next, under the auspices of the Paeroa Football Club, promise to be a great success. There are some 15 events in all, which should provide ample amusement for those present.

The recent excitmg time of it on the Auckland sharemarkel seems to be on the -wane. Scrip in most of the mines have fallen somewhat, and now the result of crushings, etc., will be anxiously looked for, and investors will receive the true value of their crip according to how the mines pan out.

We.regret to have to chronicle the death of the infant child of Mr and Mrs George Bygrave. .The child began to fail towards the latter end of last week, and passed away on Sunday evening. Messrs F. P. Jones & Co.’s special auction sale of, furniture, crockery, produce, etc., which ;took Jplaco in the Public Hall on Saturday afternoon last, was fairly well attended, and things sold well.

At the last meeting of the Board of Education it was determined to increase the school accommodation in the Thames and Ohinemuri districts. The Board appear to have entirely ignoi’ed the appeal made to them by our local Committee for additions to the public school. The size of the building at present is far too small to comfortably accommodate those attending school, in many cases children have to sit three in a desk, and it is absolutely impossible under these circumstances the scholars can carry out their school work in a satisfactory manner. We hope the Board will lose no timo in having the necessary additions tendered for. '

The excursion train from Auckland arrived punctually to time on Saturday evening last. The trip was fairly well patronised, and during their short stay in the district visited the baths, mines, and other places of interest. The excursionists had the option of either returning by the Monday morning’s train, or prolonging their stay till the following Wednesday.

‘ A good dairy farm is offered for sale by Mr T., Davenport, .who is. giving up, the dairying business,'' The farm is situated on the bank of the Waihou river, and is in close proximity to the , orearaery ; the land is of first-class quality, adundance of feed being on hand throughout the year. Those desirous of acquiring this valuable property should apply at once to Mr T. Davenport. Monthly meeting of the Band of Hope will take plaCb in the Town .Hall on Monday evening rfext. The programme is being arranged by the lady members of the committee, one of which will take the chair on the evening mentioned. , The ordinary monthly meeting of the PiaW County Council will be held in the Council Chambers, Morrinsville, to-day, commencing at 11 o’clock. The special business to be. transacted at this meeting will bo the election of Chairman and the election of a'represontative on the Waikato Hospital Board. ' Monday last, 25th inst., was tho anniversary of the opening of Te Aroha as a goldfield. Since fhat memorable day Te Aroha has undergone many changes. At times everything looked prosperous, and then again a change would set in, and the district seemed to settle into a more solid state of affairs. As the mines are begining to look up, the creameries in full swing, and the, prospects of ,the sugar-beet industry being developed, the coming year should be a very prosperous one for the tradespeople and farmers generally.

Arrangements are being made for a concert and dance to take place in the Waihou Public Hall. The proceeds are to be divided between the school funds and the local Dramatic Club. The programme is in the hands of a strong committee, which, assisted by the Dramatic Club, should prove acceptable to those who attend, The price of admission is low, while refreshments are to be' provided. Terrible accounts of anarchy and bloodshed continue to arrive from the Turkish dominions in Asia Minor, Over a score of villages have been destroyed, their destruction being accompanied bv great loss of life, the whole population being in some cases massacred. Russia and France, actting in concert, have declined to agree to the suggestion that in case of an emergency the embassies of the Powers at Constantinople should act on their- own responsibility. The representatives; of these two Powers at the same time assure the world that the European nations continue in perfect accord with respect to the Armenian trouble.

A representative cricket team from the Thames intend touring the Waikato during the Christmas holidays. Finishing up the-trip by going on to Auckland and playing the North Shore eleven on their own ground. - Owing to some unexplained reason the Mackenzie Company, which were to have performed in the Town Hall last evoning, failed to put in an appearance. ' The Volunteer Band will/ play a number of selections in the Domain on Saturday evening next, the 30th inst. - - • ■■ - • Captain Edwin has yet another gale ready for this place. His Ngaruawahia sale -will be held on Monday 9th December, and on the 12th of the same month he will hold a special horse sale at Hamilton, for which already there are 200 entries. Mr H. P. Barry, superintendent of the Waihi Goldmining Company, Limited, has two advertisements in to-day’s issue, calling tenders for supply and delivery of 10 000 kauri or totara sleepers; also for making sections of water-race and driving a tunnell. For further particulars see advt.
