SUGAR BEET INDUSTRY.
Mr Lewenberg, the Russian expert on the manufacture of sugar from beetroot, and who represents the Syndicate proposing to start that industry in the Waikato, intends visiting Te Aroha on the sth prox. He will; bo accompanied by Mr John of Auckland, Messrs Day and Graham, of Waikato. A public meeting will be held on the above date, and the question fully discussed. -■ gentlemen who have guarantee f «rms in hand should get them filled- before that date and so facilitate masters.
As showing the effect the establish - ment of the sugar-beet industry is calculated to have on a district/ we extract the following from the Montreal Weekly Witness : “At Norfolk, Nebraska, the Jbeet fields and sugar factory gave employment to • over 12,000 men, women and children. Two thousand cars or one hundred train loads offbeats were received, and in addition eight hundred car loads of coke, coal and li nestone. Two hundred cars of gr.inulated sugar were shipped for general distribution. At Norfolk, 27,551 tons of beets were converted into 5,556 t 1001b, of high grade granulated sugar. To manufacture this 8,850 tons of Coal, 5,200 tons of limestone, 650 tons of . coke, 2,400 gallons of oil, and 9,500- straining cloths were required. Three hundred people were employed daily at the factory during the.operation.”
