TE AROHA TOWN BOARD.
The members of the above Board met in their office, in the Domain Buildings, on Saturday evening last, for the purpose of transacting the usual monthly business. There was present : Commissioners Gavin (chairman), Bradley, Gallagher, Hotchin, and Hetherington. The minutes of the previous monthly meeting were read and confirmed. The inward and outward correspondence was also read. Subsidy. —A-letter was read from the Clerk of the Piako County Council, intimating that the sum of £6O subsidy to the Board on the Te Aroha-Lich-field road had been placed to the Boards credit. -
Repairs to Footpaths. —Mr Schultze, of the Club Hotel, having written ask? ing that the kerbing in front of hi ß hotel be raised, it was decided the work be carried out as soon as the necessary funds are available. . Greyed Pit.— lt was resolved : that l thVcleik again write with reference to the gravel pit; no word having been received in reply to the last communication.
Bede’s Drain.— Mr H. R. Bell wrote asking the reason why the Board had not. earned out certain drainage works near his property in Bridge-street, and trusting the Board would have the same carried oqt at once. He states the watef was laying on his property, and thought the drain would require to be lowered to be of any service. ’ Com Hotchin stated the drain was quite low enough at present, and thought if it was lowered it would be. to the Boards disadvantage. Corn Hotchin, as one of the Works Com-;, mittee, fully explained the position of the drain complained of by the corres - pondent, and gave an elaborate Account of rtbe surrounding country, the natural cohrse of Hie wiiter, etc., eto *-The' members agreed with Com Hotchin, and the letter was received. Tenders yob Lighting.—As the tenders close on Friday next for the lighting, etc., of the lamps in Whita-ker-steet, was resolved that the opening and dealing with the applications be left in the hands of the Chairman ; tohavecari-ied out. ■
Oui; RjEqent Grants.-—The Chairman said he would like to say a few. words in reference to the manner in which the member for the district* Hoh. A. J. Cadman, bad worked for. the electorate, in the way of obtaining grants, etc., for the carrying out-of certain works; '.He.(chairman) objected to the wav in which the local paper had stated that' “ while the some of £3,300 had been placed?on the estimates :for works at Rotorua . and its baths, the liberality of the Government towards Te Aroha only amounted to £ 100.” ; The Chairman stated that such was not a true and exact state of affairs, and mentioned that besides several small grants obtained during, the year, Te Aroha had received—£2,soo for Thompson’s Track; Gordon Settlement-Waharoa road, £200; Te Aroha drains, £300; making in all a total sum of over-£3,100. Mr Gavin expressed the,opinion that if ©very-, thing was takejafint'o consideration Te Aroha had receiyed even more money than Rotorua.. He proposed that a vote of thanks be forwarded to Hon Mr Cadman for the zealous manner in whichLe bad worked for the district. This was seconded by Com Bradley and carried unanimously. Bbidg-« - street Cont act The Chairman asked the Works Committee if they were in a position to report on the progress made by the contractor, Mr J. Bew, with Bridgestreet contract, and they acknowledged they had n< t been over the work lately. They (the Works Committee), being under the impression that the whole Board were to report on • the matter, and consequently they did not take any steps, with regard to <fhe work. V'vij.s.- -
The mir.utoi of the meeting being looked up showed that the Works. Committee were to report. It was re olved that the matter stand adjourned,until Monday evening, in the meanfiu a the necessary report be made out. ...
the discussions Com Hotchin repeatedly interrupted the Commissione"s from taking part in the proceedings, at last the Chairman found it necessary to qall Com Hotchin to order, and gave him to understand that he must wait till one member was finished before he commenced speaking. _ ' '"" L Graved. —Com Gavin stated he had visited various places in search of the best place to obtain Gravel for Bridgestreet contract and came to the ; conclusion that the rubble 'alongside the 'creek in Mr A. W. Edwards’ paddock was the most suitable.
A considereble discussion arose as to the time the gravel should* be put on this particular and now much talked of street.
Com Hetherington thought it would be advisable to have the gravel put on at once, and the work completed, as the length of time the contract had been going on and the manner in which same was being oarriedout was being ridiculed by the whole community. : .
'Com Hotohin said the best plan would be to leave work of gravelling until the road thoroughly set, as if put on at once the gravel would be in muck. ■ The Chairman said it made no difference to him how people talked or what papers said about the work, he. was strongly of opinion the majority
of the members would endorse his remarks, that the work was being carried out in the best possible manner, and they were making the best of a bad job. B UEGESB - street. The Chairman stated he had let a small contract for. work to be carried out in Burgessstreet, leading down to the railway station. * ‘ The following accounts were passed for payment: -D. McL. After a.considerable and very spirited discuss!o a, in.which/all mejnbers freely gave vent to • theirfeelingsp it was resolved that the contractor -receive the -full amount for/ the formation, les9 some 30s, which amount is' kept back until such time as Mr Bew puts on sorab 18jLoadsiqf dirt on a certain part of the 'street, and also trim the sidings of same. The . sum of £42 15s was kept back until the *metal placed on the .street. This work the Board decided to leave.stand.pyer till January 'next. *• .
