THE BURGLARLY AT WAIHI Waihi , Saturday. No further light has been thrownupon the burglary at Waihi, but investigations reveal the' fact that the work is that of a gang, as apparently several places have recently been visited by burglars. There is no doubt that a large number of roughs have congregated at Waihi as a result of the boom in mining, and not getting work they are now endeavouring to gain a living by theiving.
ALARMING BUGGY ACCIDENT AT - ' . PAEROA. ' ' Paeroa, Saturday. What might have proved a veryserious accident occurred here this morning, but fortunately those concerned escaped without injury. It appears that, a Thamesite named H. Marshall, his wife, and tw;o children, were on their way to Waiteauri in a buggy. It was decided to stop at Paeroa for an hour or so, consequently the party proceeded to the lower township, and when in crossing a bridge, the horse jumped to one Bide, the result being that the wheels of the. buggy passed over the edge of the bridge and capsized the occupants ®f the conveyance into a deep ditch, the wheels passing over Mrs Marshall as the horse, which took fright, bolted. Beyond a wetting and a very sdVere shaking, however, it is not thought that any injury was occasioned, though the escape was most miraculous. THE COLONIAL BANK ' Wellington, October 14. The Post says that the agreement for the purchase of the Colonial Bank by the Bank of New Zealand is. now practically complete and a scheme is being formulated to give effect to it. This may‘be expected to come down to the House within the next 48 hours., FATAL SHOOTING ACCIDENT Wellington, October 14. Harry Smith, a youth of 15, accidentally shot himself yesterday afternoon. He was out on _ the Hills with three other, lads rabbit shooting, and Smith took his* gun by the muzzle to steady himself down a Bteep, incline. It exploded, shooting him through the arm aud groin- He was taken to the hospital, but died whilst being examined. THE ANTRAX TROUBLE, . - Wellington, Monday; I am informed that the Department have offered, in order to finally stamp out the late outbreak of anthrax at Oliaupo beyond any probability of recurrence, to find part of the cost of liming the land upon which the affected animals grazed. One of the parties .concerned has already accepted the offer, and the others are expected to follow the example. THE LICENSING ACT IN WAIKATO Cambridge, Monday.;, • Information has been received that the administration of tho Licensing Act in Waikato Has beeh taken from Waikato County Council and given to the Cambridge Borough. This is ip consequence of the recent friction and lawsuits.
