FIRE INSURANCE RATES.
- New Plymouth, Saturday. A public meeting was held last night to protest against the new insurance tariff, which has been raised 33 per cent on-the old one. Great indignation was shown at the meeting, and the following resolution was carried unanimously. “That this meeting views With indignation the iniquitous attempt on the part of insurance companies to • increase the already excessive rate of insurance charged in Taranaki; that this meeting is of opinion that the Isew Zealand companies, who have in the past'received the support of most of the members of the Association, hare acted unjustly to the New Zealand insurers in allying themselves with lor foreign companies to exact excessiy ) rates from insurers, and we pledge ourselves to do all in our power to discontinue the" support to the • said companies in future, ijnd that it be an instruction to the secretary to write to all insurers’ associations in New Zealand urging them to adopt tire same policy: also that this meeting consider it . advisable that a delegate be appointed to meet in conference with pther delegates from similarly situated towns, with ; tlie ■ object of urging on the Government the advisability of starting a State Insurance Department, or, failing that, to take steps to establish a colonial co-operative insurance .company.”
