Sydney, Sept. 23. It is rumoured the French consuls are sounding the Australian Governments with a view of the annexation*of the New Hebrides. Enquiries gb to confirm the belief that some important changes are contemplated. The Premier states he has. received no information on the subject from the Imperial authority. He is convinced France will take no steps without consulting England, and equally sure England will do nothing to disturb the status-quo. Nothing has occurred to disturb the treaty between England and France. Missionaries recently returned from the group say the opinion generally exists that a movement is on foot to secure French Control of the Islands, and considerable alarm existed among the English residents and traders. The missionareis fear annexation will put an end to. Protestant missions.
