THE UREWERA COUNTRY .
DEPUTATION OF NATIVES TO THE /PREMIER. .; W KLLiNGi’oN, Sunday. • A deputation comprising about 20 youqg prominent natives in the Urewera country waited on the Premier yesterday afternoon on matters connected with the Urewera country. They pointed out that they desired necessary legislation to have, the delimitation of the Urewera country set out; • that surveyors. should be appointed to do this;'and that they desired to set up committees to govern their own internal affairs. There would be various hapus, but the natives did not wish to close the country and were willing that roads admitting of tourist traffic, should be constructed. The Premier congratu lated the deputation on the .friendly spirit expressed, and promised to give the natives every assistance. ;' With respect to prospecting in the Urewera country, he thought the natives should undertake that themselves' and the Government would send experts to assist them. He promised to withdraw the constabulary from that country at an early date, but two or three . constables would be stationed there, and the law would have to be observed by natives and Europeans alike. Later in. the afternoon the deputation were entertained at the Premier’s residence where several hakas of a miid characfer were danced.
