Smith’s drapery shop, and spread to the Egnidht Hotel so rapidly that some of the boaders had no time to escape. - . Mr Caverhill, secretary to the Waitara Freezing works, and, Mr Turner, architect aud bniloer, were burned to death. .w.
The fire spread to. Nimmp, . Scott (stationer), Kemp, Cohen, Cummins (draper), Lewin (hairdresser),.and Caplen. (solicitor), in Princess-street, where it was stopped by a concrete ■wall. S ■ ■
In the other direction it spread to the Commercial Hotel; to the premises occupied by Mr Wilson (commission agent),' Newsham (billiard room), Purser (hairdresser), Parrington ((vine and spirit merchant), the new post office and courthouse, Faber’s stable, and the Star office, all of which,‘were totally destroyed: There was a north-west gale blowing at the time. The centre of the town is cleared. Both sides of Princes-streej: and half High-street are destroyed,. includiug the Egmont and Commercial Hotels, Loan and Mercantile office, and eleven other premises, including the newpost office, and new court-house, and. buildings adjoining the Bank of New Zealand;
The damage is estimated at £40,000.'. '' . - : '• '
