ACCIDENT TO QUEEN OF THE BELGIANS

' Brussels, August 31. The Queen of the Belgians, while hunting to-day at. Spa, was thrown from her horse and received injuries to her head. Though she is confined to bed, the wounds are not believed to be of a serious nature. STRUCK BY A WHALE Sydney. September 1. The bai’quentine Handa Isle arrived from Mercury Bay to-day in a damaged condition. At noon on August 24 two immense whales approached the vessel. One dived under her, and the other struck the vessel’ amidships with tremendous" force. .Several planks were stove in and smashed. Water began to make at the rate of a foot an hour, and Captain Kobinson then decided t£ throw overboard the deck cargo of timbei with the view of raising the hole above the water line. The pumps were kept going throughout the afternn a and night, and the next day, the vessel being lightened, the water" was got under and the breach stopped by pillows and hides. The water was then easily checked. The last seen of •the whale was sicking, tail foremost, in a mass of blood. Had it not been that the vessel had a timber cargo it is believed that she' would have foundered.
