The Daily News’ correspondent telegraphs that Russia is increasing her troops on the Armenian frontier, and will possibly intervene there on behalf of the Powers. London, August 24. The Statist says the ‘world’s wheat crop indicates that the surplus of 18951896 will be about equal to the needs. The United Kingdom crop will be five and a-half million quarters, which is believed to he the smallest on record.
THE WOOL MARKET. FAVOURABLE PROSPECTS. Mr E. M. Young, in the course of an interview, said the prospects of wool were more favourable than for four or five years, as many manufacturers both here and on the Continent were refusing orders unless at considerable advance. Mr Young expects that at the September and November sales Americans will make heavy purchases. Americans are taking an enormous quantity of manufactured goods from Yorkshire. - ’
LONDON August 23. In the House of Commons, Mrllanbui’g, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, replying Mr H. Heaton, said he could see no reason to arrange for the sale of colonial stamps in Great Britian. There was no real demand for such a course. Besides, it was quite likely they would be used for remitting sma'l sums to the colonies
