SERIOUS ACCIDENT ’ : - Wanganui August 26. „ A young man named Herbert Wilkie, aged 25, a settler in Wainiafino,. was seriously, injured by a tree falling. lie was carried by a party of 25 bush fellers and roadmen through the bush;# nd bog-to Kipiriki and into Wanganui by a canoe to the hospital. The party had a terrible job, being up to their waists-in' mud, and it was difficult to get through the bush. Slight hopes are entertained for, the man’s 'recovery. There is a son of Wilkie’s in Greytown. A BOY ACCIDENTALLY SHOT. Wellington, Monday. A boy named;? Herbert Perkins accidentally, sliok| himself at Upper Hutt yesterday afternoon.'' He was out shooting; and had placed his gun on the ground. When he went to pick it up he caught it near the muzzle, and it exploded. The charge blew the top of his hew, I off, and death was instantaneous.
TELEGBAPH DEPABTMENT. Wellington, Monday. The Telegraph Department proposes to-substitute copper wire instead of iron wire as opportunity presents itself. A copper wire runs between Blenheim and Kaikoura and Wellington and between Christchurch and Waipawa, and in a short time the gap will be completed, and the electrical distance Wellington and?) Christchurch practically reduced from a long circuit to a short one. The iron wire in use has a resistance of 16 units per inile ;jl while thatf of the copper wire which is replacing it is only five units. Copper wire is also less liable to become oxydised. The department intends to have wire from Wellington to Dunedin, and also from this city right' through to Auckland. Work upon the North Island sections is now proceeding. : NEW ZEALAND TIMBEB IN .
