VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.
Adjutant Grant, who has been in very indifferent health for some time past, is now convalescent, but we understand he will not resume his duties for at least another fortnight.
The non-commissioned officers of the Te Aroha Rifles are at present undergoing a course of instruction prior to their examination, which takes place in about three weeks time.
The competition for McCallum’s Cup will be fired at the butts on Thursday afternoon next, with Martini Henry rifles. Considerable interest is manifested in this event by our local Volunteers, and no doubt a large number will muster up on the day meutioned. Class-firing is now being gone on with by the members of the T.R.V., n order to entitle them to capiation money.
At the last parade-of the Auckland City Rifles Captain Robertson read to those present a district order notifying that seven men (whoso names were mentioned) belonging to the Avondale Rifle Volunteer Company were dis missed from the Volunteer Force of New Zealand for non-attendance at their duties (vide paragraph 46, subsection 1. New Zealand Defence Act, 1886). The officer commanding th< company is instructed to take immediate steps to collect from these men all Government property on issue to them,, and failing to do" so to report to the officer commanding the district, when proceedings would be taken.. Officers commanding companies are requested to note the names of the men dismissed. We hope our local volunteers will be true to their colours, so as not to compel the officers to take similar actions On Tuesday evening next an Inspection Parade will be held in the Public Hall, when Colonel Goring will be present to inspect the Company.
