ARBOR DAY AT WAIORONGOMAI.
The Waiorongomai people with their usual liberality and consideration for the young people provided an excellent days sport for the school children last Wednesday. The business of the day was first disposed of, the children planting barberry plants for a hedge inside the fence on the school front. They.then sat down to enjoy the cake, sandwiches, etc., which had been prepared by Mrs Jennings with her usual skill; oranges were also distributed in the afternoon and the balance of the day was devoted to a programme of sport's, numbering some sixteen events, withArizes ranging from half-crowns downwards. All of the races were keenly contested, and in most the finishes were so close that picking the winners was no sinecure. The boys hurdle races brought about the usual number of falls incidental to
country events. 1 I 'L hui the. girls showed wohdorful aptitude over the small sticks, the winner clearing the hurdles and oven a fallen antagonist in her stride like a born Liberator. Mr Rehnick ably filled the onerous post of handicapper, Messrs Baskett. and Pennington held the tape and Mr Jennings acted as starter, übiquitous, as
referee, and Messrß Murphy and Cronin also gave valuable assistance. The total amount of money subscribed was £6 ss, which after paying for the substantial refreshments left about £2 5s available-'for'prize money. The races were followed by "an interesting ceremony in the distribution by the Chairman, of the attendance certifi-
cates for the June quarter. These were very tasteful in design and excellent in execution, and were awarded as follows; eleven first-class to thoss who had not misßed a single attendance, Henry and Robert Adams, John
Charlesmnd Leila Jennings, Ethel and Yergie Scott, John Donovan, Lavinia ißurchell, Ethel Andrew, andfNessie Jeffrey. Seventeen had not 16st more than. ten and received - second-class certificates; Harold and Cyril Clarke, Sam and Eliza Jennings, Tom Roberts, iL’om Scott, Richard and Aroha Adams, Walter .Murphy, Fred, and Olive Baskett, Basil, Stanley and Alfred Beeson, Harold Andrew, Mary Murphy and Kathleen Jeffrey.. The action of the Committee in providing these certificates is fully justified by results, the avorago attendance for the-past month being 61.5 out of 89 on the roll or nearly 90 per cent.,, - The Committee desire to thank all who gave assistance, including besides those mentioned Mrs Cronin and Miss Stevens. ' An enjoyable dance in the schoolhouse wound up a highly successful day. •' "■
