OHINEMURI.
(From our own Correspondent).
The roads in this district are just now at their very worst. Notwithstanding the efforts of the County Conncil and one or two surfacemen there is. a very great probability that traffic will have to be stopped on the Waihi road if it gets much worse than it is at present. I think it is high time that the authorities regulated the weights of loads to be carried over these roads. A tax might be levied upon all . loads above a certain weight and the money thus obtained dev<?ted to the maintenance' of our highways. It is the heavy loads that is cutting up the Waihi roads more than all other traffic,, quite recently a case of machinery weighing 5 tons, and requiring 17 horses .to draw it, was taken out for the Waihi Company, this sort of thing ought to be stopped or taxed, as. such loads work terrible havoc with the roads. >
While on the/ question of roads I wouklvefer to the wonderful engineer-' ing skill displayed in.the cut'ing and formation near the Paeroa Post-office It is iinpoasible for pedestrians to get to the ..office dry shod, while the mail coaches frequently get up to the axles in mud and slush on the main streets of the township. The footpaths are simply disgraceful to the body having control of them. .We hope something will be done to improve, them during the coming summer months, comparatively little expense would put them in first-class permanent crier, either with asphalt or with tar and sand. ;
As showing the hand fides of oUr out-put of gold it may be of interest to your readers to know that during the past Six weeks the local branh of the B.N.Z. have purchased no less than 7,7580 z of gold, this was shipped to- Auckland by the s.s. Eotomahaha on Saturday last. ; Mr H. -Gordon, who it mil be remembered pegged out the Ohinemuri river near the Crown battery,* at Karangahake, recently, has again been successful in qhfaming and treating 2 .tons of tailing,,, he .experienced some difficulty in getting- at the tail?' ings owing to tKe/rivor being exceptionally high at :this season. Mr Gordon has been handsomely rewarded for his pains, the .tailings were treated at the Moanataiari battery and yielded the satisfactory return of '2120z. from the 2 tons treated.
There is every prospect that a long felt want is ajjoufc to be supplied in -thh * erectiohi ; a commodious boarding-iousie!, the Wesleyan church; by Mrs Beeche, whose husband recently died at Codlgafdie.
