THE CYANIDE PATENT

A telegram from Wellington informs us that the Ministry have decided to proceed with the-action in the law Courts to test tho validity of the patent rights granted'to the Cassel’s Company, and that in this matter they are in correspondence with one or more of the Australian Governments. It is reported that the Government will be represented by two leading counsel, and that the Cassels Oompauy have retained Sir R. Stout 'and Mr H. D. Bell, of Wellington, whilst Mr Button and Mr Chapman, of Dunedin, will represent some of the companies interested in the matter. The hearing of the case will be looked forward to witb great interest by all those concerned or interested in mining in New Zealand. 1 J., 'f l i ■ KAPAI-VERMONT G.M. CO -• ? ——r —'■'? A GOOD YIELD ; The reported improvement in the prospects ohthe Kapai-Vermont mine, Kuao’tunu, is sustained by ' the yield just obtained as the result of the crushing of 242 tons treated, at the Company’s reduction works during the month. The manager telegraphed on Saturday morning, “ 242 tons or ore treated returned 2850zs gold.’ This is an increase of lOlozs over that obtained for the previous month, and taking the value of the gold at tho same price per ounce, the result is equal to about £I9OO. The manager informs us that since the 15th of February, 2162 ozs of gold have been obtained from the mine, its value being about £5400. THE WAIHI MINE The return from this mine may be expected about the end of the week. The whole ninety head of stampers have been running for the four weeks, but for the. first ten days there was some little difficulty with the suction pump and the cyanide vats, which-will probably affect the return slightly. The whole of the battery is now, how-ever,-in good working order, and in spite of the difficulties we haye referred to tfio month’s return is expected to reach between £BOOO and £9OOO. For the coming month, now that the works are in full swing* a still f urther improvement in the output may be looked for Mr Barry,; the manager of this great enterprise, ' recently paid a visit to Auckland, and had a conference With the local directors regarding further developments. THE WOODSTOCK The crushing .from this mine is showing up for a better return this month, and may roach something like £909, as the, saving at tho. battery averages a higher percentage than it did last month. No boubt further improvement will be effected. THE WAIHI GRAND JUNCTION In this mime it has been found necessaxy to sink the shaft by day labour instead of contract labour." Contractors are now very cautious in taking up fresh works, owing to the scarcity of. good and expert miners, and,the tender recently accepted for sinking the shaft has been thrown up owing, it is believed, to this difficulty. Mr Welstead, the .chairman of the .London board, has just paid a final visit to tho mine prior to his return to London. THE. CROWN MINE. Some very good ore is now coming to hand from this mine, and the reef in the No. 6 level shows improvement. A winze Has. been sunk to a depth of 72 feet upon the lode, and some of the stone broken put shows gold freely. The crushing this month is expected to be equal to that of the last one.
