A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT

SIX MEN DROWNED. HEROIC CONDUCT. Melbourne, April 14. A terrible accident occurred in the air chamber on a section of the Hobson’s Bay main sewerage works last night. Six men were working in the chamber, when suddenly the water burst in. Watson, an engineer, was about to enter the chamber, when a man named Burke, who was inside, pushed him back and shut the door in his face. Looking through the glass in the door, Watson saw the ..water rising. Burke’s action was that of a hero. Apparently he saw there was no chance for himself or the others in the chamber, he closed the door in order to save the lives of those in the tunnel The names of those drowned are:—Buchanan, a civil engineer; Burke, boss of the shift; Johnson, Gabriel, Jackson, and Foster. None of the bodies have yet been recovered. A FATAL FIRE

SEVEN PERSONS BURNED TO DEATH

ESCAPE IMPOSSIBLE Sydney, April 14. A terrible fatal fire occurred a Parkes this morning. , A large tenement house occupied by a widow named Quinn and family, was discovered on fire at an early hour. Mrs Quinn’s brother and another man managed to escape with great difficulty but the other occupants, consisting of Mrs Quinn and five children, whose ages ranged from seven months to ten years, were burnt to death, as was also a sister of Mrs Quinn, named Perry. All those burnt were apparently suffocated first by the smoko, and it appeared as if it was impossible for them to escape owing to several of the doors and windows being nailed up as a preventative against burglars.
