A GUN ACCIDENT Hamilton, Saturday. Clarence Skellern, a young man residing at Huntly, was. brought, into the hospital to-day suffering from a guu-shot wound in the chest. He was out duck-shooting, and seeing a couple of ducks he commenced stalking them, trailing his loaded gun by the muzzle.. By some accident the trigger or cock got-caught in the scrub, and the piece went off, lodging one of the charges in the young mans chest. He was met at Frankton by an ambulance carriage and taken at once to the hospital. BITTEN BY A KATIPO Wellington, Saturday.; Mr Wm. Bell, draper’s assistant, was bitten by a katipo, which had got into his clothes while bathing at Porirua. Energetic measures . had to be taken. His back was scored with a razor and blood removed. Very severe gales and floods have been experienced in the Wellington proving, but, owing to telegraphic communication between here and Wellington being interrupted, the wiros having been blown down or carried away, no particulars are to hand.

Enormously heavy slips have curred iu the Manawatu Gorge, a d near Matatnau, putting a complete stop to all railway traffic. It is not yet known whether the Waihora has left Wellington. - News has just come to hand that the important road bridge over the Manawatu at Ashurst has gone, carrying the telegraph wires with it. The. alternative line by the East Coast is down at Tenui The repairing party cannot cross the river, and it is expected it will be several days before communication can be restored.

BOATING DISASTER AT RUSSELL

THREE LIVES LOST .. , .. , Tuesday. I he police authorities have received a telegram from Russell, Bay of Islands, stating that Christian Kyre, aged 40, settler, Christian Peter Heinrich his son (9), and Annie Elizabeth, his daughter (7J). were accidentally drowned by the capsizing ,of a boat ini a squall, between Opua and Russell. The bodies had been recovered. An inquest was to have been held yesterday.
