MINING.

KAPANGA The development of this mine at the low level is progressing steadily. Good headway is being made with the Cross cut from the 800 ft level, which has now been driven a total distance of over 400 ft; about another 150 ft of driving will bring the tunnel to the point.where it is‘ r hoped to intersect the junction of the Kapanga'and Scotty’s lodes, if they maintain the same un-der-lay as in the upper workings ; any change in course or under-lay would, obviouly, alter* the . calculations. Operations are in progress at the 420 ft. level, driving on Scotty’s lode ; the reef if looking well, but there is a scarcity of the precious metal, at present ; a rise is also being put-up above the level, on the same reef. Work is being carried on in the intermediate level, on the Kapanga reef, and strong colors of gold are visible in the' stone. At the 300 ft level some prospecting is being done on Scotty’s reef. The Diamond drill has not been operating during the past few days, but will resume as soon as a new Crown-head comes to hand; the bore is down 100 ft below the 800ft,level, and is penetrating reefy-matter.* ' HAURAKI The staff of workmen in this mine has been increased this week, several additional miners have been put on. The mine is still looking A. 1., and several hauls of rich ore have been during the past few days, in fact rich specimens are obtained at nearly every breaking-do wn.
