THOMPSON’S TRACK
(to the Editor.) Sir,— ln your issue of the 30th Mr J. Mills asks my authority for a certain statement. Now, I . should have thought that when Thompson’s track was mentioned Mr Mills would hardly have dared show his face, however, as he has-appeared and asked a question, I gladly answer it. My authority is J. Mills, Esq., J.P. Mr Mills may remember a conversation we had al oat the track at the Te Aroha races. H > certainly spoke then as if he knew the track was only going to be made Bft wide in the commencement. It appears, however, that he denies this now, and I must perforce accept his statement. But, sir, Mr Cadman, according to your leaderette of the 27th. told your representative that it would only be made Bft wide at first. MiMills. however, says he knew nothin"about it. Mr Cadman, therefore, told your reporter a thing that he cone; aled from Mr Mills. Two alternatives present themselves Either Mr Cadnnn is not straightforward, winch I am loth to believe ; or else Mr Mills is not quite so much in the confidence of the Government as he would have us believe. Mr ..Mills also says that he does not now know that the track is only to be Bft wide. If he can got his supporters to subscribe his expenses as he has done for his former memorable trip, he can come out any day and seo for himself. And after he has seen the work in progress, I challenge him to deny my assertion that the Government are wasting public money, and will ask him to explain why Mr Cadman could not commoner a 16ft carriage load at once to connect with the Bft wide track that is already formed for nearly the whole distance. I am, etc.,
W. H. Ferries. Shaftesbury, 31st March.
