We learn that Mr Smith,'Wesleyan Missionary, of Paerosi, is shortly to leave that district. Both the Waihpu and Te Aroha West creameries are hard at work, and the supply to each is on the ihcrease. Bev T. A Nor rib will conduct service in the Presbyterian • church here to-morrow morning and Mr J. A Cochrane in-the evening. ! , Most of the business places observed Wednesday last (Race Day), as - a close holiday. The majority of the people .went to witneas tho Te Aroha J.C. races, while .others enjoyed themselves in boating on the river, riding, driving, jpic-nicing, etc.
A dance was held in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening last, the hall was very comfortably filled, and an enjoyable time was spent. .
The first passenger train from Paeroa arrived hereon’Wednesday last, bringing, up close on one hundred excursionists. The Te Aroha folk are likewise privileged to enjoy a (visit I .'to Paeroa- by team, which leaves this station 10 a.m, arriving atPaeroa about ir o’clock. ■ , Several Waharoa and .Matamata farmers who have been staying .here lately, say that the country in that . direction is ,i. looking splendid, the grass looking better than it has been for years, .consequently stock are in good, condition.' The attention of contractors 1 is called to an advertisement from the Piako. iGoupty Engineer calling-for tenders for - various works in the, County, particulars of which will he found elsewhere. . v;W yv • 1 Amy Vaughan’s Amazons gave an entertainment in the Public Hall on race night, the Hall was well filled, and ‘the performance was as stated, viz., two hours, of genuine fun'. The singing of the lady members of the company was especially good. ‘On Thursday afternoon last, about five o’clock, a good deal of excitement caused in Whitaker-street by a man named G. Campbell running down the street with another young fellow ooming up in the rear, and shouting out at the top of his voice ‘ Stop thief!‘ It appears that Campbell had snatched the sum of .£l7 from the pocket of a man ,named W. E. Leys, and endeavoured to make' ’his escape with .the same. He was, however, found and brought up vo'sterdn.v morning before Messrs Pavitt and Gallagrer, J.’sP., and charged with the offence. Mr Gilchrist appeared for accused, who asked that as the prosecutor no where to be found the case be dismissed; which was accordingly done. 1 The ordinary monthly meeting oi? the Piako County Council was held in the Council Chambers, Morrinsville, on Thursday .last, the 14th inst. A letter was read from Mr Cbeeseman, secretary of the Acclimatisation Society, asking the Council to project the purity of the streaiiis within its domains, ; he stated that oyanide not only effects the fish in the streams but also cattle, and anything else drinking therefrom. It was thought that certain streams should be preserved by the Warden. The following tenders were received for sanding ThamesWaikato road, near the Waihou sale yards: McCabe, £9 12s 6d ; Mackie, £l2 ss; P. O’Grady, .£l3 2s 6d; R. Parr (accepted) £9.
