MORS JAPANESE SUCCESSES. PEACE PROSPECTS. Shanghai, March 8. Tiie Japanese have captured Yingkow, a port of Neuchwang, after heavy fighting. Tokio, March 9. The official view here is that the prospects of peace are favourable. Li Hung Chang’s departure for China has been delayed for a week at the request of the Japanese. Shanghai, March 9. The Japanese guarantee the safety ofjEuropeans and Americans in Twingkou. The Japanese troops have occupied Kohan. THE DEMANDS OP JAPAN. DESPERATE FIGHTING. HEAVY LOSSES BY THE CHINESE. ATTITUDE OF ENGLAND AND FRANCE. Shanghai, March 9. It is alleged that Japan demands that the Chinese ports shall be open to the world’s trade, but does not seek any preference in the matter. March 10. 'The Chinese, in retreating from Newchwang to Yungkou, fought spiritedly, the Japanese artillery at close range pouring in a deadly fire, and killing hundreds. The forts at Yungkou and Hich Resisted after the capture of Newchwang, but were taken on Thursday. On Saturday the Japanese attacked Thien Chuang Tai, and a fierce engagement took place for-three hours. The Chinese lost two thousand, and the Japanese ninety-six. The Japanese shells wrought greatcarnage among the enemy, and the charge by the infantiy converged the retreat into a rout. ' Prince Kung’s army, broken up by repeated disasters, has now ceased to be effective. >• March 11. The Chinese force, defeated at Thien Chuang Tai, numbered ten thousand. Their artillery proved to he useless, and the infantry was feeble and not amenable to control. Paris, March 10. Figaro states that England and France insist on the status quo in China being maintained, and will not permit Japan to seize Formosa.
