A MYSTERIOUS DEATH Invercaliglle, February 25. Jamos Henry Pidgeon died yesterday somewhat mysteriously. The deceased had been engaged mixing anew . rabbit poison, discovered,,By Mr F. Dansells, who had warned the workmen not to stand too close after they had made the poison, the ingredients of which is a secret. PidgeonJeok ill and died yesterday, and the other two workmen were also bad, but have rerecovered . The.; presumed is poisoning through inhalation. BREACH OF LICENSING ACT Napier, February 25. Mr John Fenwick, licensee of the London Hotel, was fined £1 and costs for a breach of section 131 of the Licensing Act by paying wages to a man within the hotel premises, the recipient not being a labourer employed there. It appears that the man was in Fenwick’s employ as a stevedore, and going to the hotel for his money was paid in the private room. The Magistrate held that an offence, within the meaning of the Act, had been committed. , j ALLEGED EMBEZZLEMENT GF LODGE MONEY. Christchurch, Monday. Mr Ritchie, Stock Inspector, has returned from, a visit Jo the experimental farm near Riveriey. In a few days a series of-'experiments will be the treatment of sheep suffering firom parasite worms, a malady that for years past has produced a heavy mortality among flocks on the West Coast of this Island. The experiments will be under the direction of Mr Gilruth, Government veterinary surgeon. DROWNED IN A LAGOON
Invercargill, Monday The body of John McMullen, labourer, was found in the lagoon in the suburbs of East Gore yesterday. At the inquest a verdict of accidental drowning was returned, with a rider to the effect that the Borough Council should attond to such dangerous places, the street leading into Me Mullen’s house being formed to only a narrow extent and through the logoon. THE PREMIER Wellington, Monday After landing the Governor at Onehunga, the Ohineinoa will proceed to Greymouth, and bring on the Premier and his family to Wellington. As the Hinemoa will bo light, she will probably cross the bar and go alongside the wharf there.
