THE LABOR MOVEMENT. STEAMSHIP OWNERS AROUSED. SYDNEY, July 17. The wharf labourers have passed a resolution rendering it unlawful, for any member of the Union to work for any person contracting for the loading or discharging of inter colonial boats. Delegates from the Union interviewed the steamship owners, who replied that the contracts for stevedoring were made for .reasons of economy, as the old system was ruinous. Work was resumed on the To Kapo and Jubilee tills morning, the owners agreeing to discharge the foreman {lending a settlement being arranged. At a meeting of wharf labourers an animated discussion took place on the question of the employment of stevedores. It was decided to rescind yester day’s resolution and allow stevedores to carry out the existing contracts for 12 months. In view of the demands put forward by the various labour bodies the steamship owners have decided to take a firm stand. Conferences are being arranged with the seamen to-morrow, and the marine officers ami engineers next week. EIGHT MILLION ACRES OF LAND. A RUSH OF APPLICANTS. Eight million acres of leasehold areas, formerly devoted to pastoral pursuits, have been offered for selection. The rush of applicants was so great as to necessitate balloting in almost every ease.
