WAHAROA.

[From our own Correspondent.}

Waharoa, Monday. The Maoris held a great gnlafflay here last Saturday week, beingthe anniversary of the King’s birthday, entertaining their friends and providing them with amusements in the shape of football, sports, horse racing, etc. The day opened with a football match, Matamata v. All Comers. The play was pretty rough, especially that of the Matamata’s, and resulted in a win for the All Comers by one point to nil. After about two hours spent in general sports, the horse racing started, there were six events and all were pretty well contested. The following horses proved the winners : Hurdles: Kiwitahi, 1 ; Magnesia, 2. Maiden : Julia, 1 ; Ginger, 2. Cup: Sam, 1 ; Ben, 2. Steeplechase : Kiwitaki, 1 ; Magnesia, 2, Pony Race : Ned, 1 ; Julia, 2. Consolation : Ben, 1. The natives got very excited over some of the events, but they behaved themselves on the whole very well indeed, no fighting or anything of the sort being indulged in. The evening was spent in speech making and feasting, as is. usual with Maoris on such occasions. r
