' , __ * ' i IMPENDING SEAMENS STRIKE. -• WELLINGTON, Monday. . The matters itt dispute between the steamship owners and the MaVine Officers’ Association is assutiiing a serious aspect. The letter forwarded by the Hon. George McLean (representing the steamowners) to the Association is said to have been of an unfavourable nature. The Association this evening addressad a letter to Mr McLean, in which they state that unless their amended demands are complied with before noon on Monday, the 14th i list, all members of the Association sailing in New Zealand waters will be called out. The Association has cabled to the Officer’s Association of Victoria and Now South Wales acquainting them of their action. LATEST PARLIAMENT A RY. THE PROPOSED REDUCTION OF ESTIMATES BY £50,000. GOVERNMENT ACCEPT THE PROPOSAL. ROYAL ’OMMLSSION TO BE ASKED FOR. WELLINGTON, Last Night. The crisis at Wellington appears to have been pretty well ended by thy following resolution, drafted by Sir Harry Atkinson, and accepted'by the Retrenchment Committee •: “ That, while recognising wvitjr \satisfaction, '.the decrease already effected in public expenditure, the Committee is of opinion that a further reduction of at .least L 50,000 should be made without being injurious to the interests of the Colony.” ’
Several, members of the retrenchment party intend to follow up the crusade just entered upon by asking For the appointment of a Royal Commission of . three persons to go right through the country, the same as uar.dorie by the .Commission of 1880, to examine into tlie condition of the Civil Service, and report, to the House with a view to a re-organisation of the service. The names of the Commissioners Suggested are Messrs Withy, Barron, and Percival. In the meantime several ‘ retrenchers’ mean to fight the Estimates as they go through upon those cases which are glaring.
