SUICIDE BY SHOOTING.
O AMARU, July 7. A most deliberate suicide took place here about 9 o’clock this morning, when Richard Bennett, aged about 50 years, shot himself through the heart with a rifle. Doceased had been for many years chief accountant for George Sumpter, and was an old soldier and ex-lieutenant of volunteers, having been connected with tho latter force for many years. He was observed this morning bringing tho rifle to his office and a junior clerk noticing that he went upstairs to a room used for volunteer purposes, told Mr Sumpter’s storeman. This man, suspicious that all was not right, proceeded to the room in question. Just as ho opened the dcor the fatal shot was fired, the bullet going through tho heart. Deceased was sitting in afchair, and had placed the muzzle of the rifle against his vest, the butt resting on the ground, a piece of string being tied to the trigger, and tho other end being attached bo the top of his boot. The reason for the rash act is variously stated. An inquest will be held later on.
