It is reported here that the freezing works at Waitara hare been purchased by Messrs Nelson Brothers, of Napier, who intend re opening them at an early date. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commeice, the President read extracts from a letter received by his firm from their London Correspondent, on New Zealand hemp, as follows : “ One of the United Kingdom rope makers has leen telling us that he recently, and for tho first time, used some fully fair New Zealand hemp, to make twine for an order previously filled with sisal and mahflla. -Ho is very pleased with the r.-sults, and indeed tells us (and he is probably the best rope-mak.’r iu the United Kingdom) that he finds New Z ‘aland hemp hns been better than sisal or limnilia.” He urges the milleis to improve the quality of tho fibre so that the industry might become a permanent one.
